Hi all,
Congratulations to all of those who have come through the exam season unscathed! It’s just a summer of preparing for that last deadline ahead of you, but don’t think that the Union has forgotten you. We’ll be running activities throughout the summer, the highlight of which will be out PGA Boat Party on July 22nd.
Our gym is remaining open throughout the summer and quietens down significantly, so make the most of it while you can! Keep your eyes peeled for the annual squash tournament.
As always, if you wish to submit your own events, news or advertisements for housing, etc please send an email to d.hawk@ucl.ac.ukand remember to include important information like dates, times and contact details.

The PGA are pleased to announce a summer boat party for UCL postgraduates. A Pimms reception will welcome postgrads onto the boat which will cruise along the river Thames. A bbq will also be included and a DJ will be there to entertain.

Why not take up nature conservation volunteering. The skills required are easy to learn, the result is rewarding for you, for local people and for the wildlife in the nature reserves we work in.
You might be building a set of steps, hacking away at the weeds, helping host a bird of prey event, putting up bat boxes, clearing out a pond, counting bird numbers or identifying wild flowers.

Public Engagement Symposium
The first annual UCL Symposium on Public Engagement will take place on 11 June, 2.45 - 6pm in the Wilkins Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre. If you'd like to find out more about public engagement taking place at UCL, meet people who can help you get involved, and let people know about your own projects, the Public Engagement Unit would love to see you there.
The symposium is a chance for members of the UCL community to learn from each others' experiences in sharing their research with people outside the university. You will also be able to find out more about UCL funding streams for public engagement, and how to obtain funding from other sources for this work. Speakers at the symposium will include colleagues from across UCL.
UCL has been given national recognition as a Beacon for Public Engagement and receives funding from HEFCE, Research Councils UK and the Wellcome Trust to support this work. UCL's conversations with public groups span all disciplines and take part at every level of the University.

Health and Society Summer School
The International Institute for Society and Health (IISH) (which is part
of the Research Department of Epidemiology & Public Health) is hosting a
Summer School at UCL, from Monday 13 to Friday 17 July 2009
We are expecting approximately 50 participants. The cost to external
participants is £600/£650 - depending on when they applied.
We are offering up to 4 summer school places to UCL graduate students in
exchange for assisting the course organisers ensure the course is a
success and that participants expectations are met wherever possible.
You will only be required to be on duty for approximately half of the
timetable but you are welcome to attend the entire course.
If you would like to take up this opportunity please send a statement of
not more than 150 words stating what you think makes a good summer
school and why you would be suitable for one of the four places. Please include your full name and details of languages spoken. Please send you

Conference for Research Students
The Bigger Picture: Navigating the Research World- Monday 22 June
UCL is organising a major 1-day conference looking at Navigating the Research World: the Bigger Picture.
The conference is aimed at early career researchers - research staff and research students in their final year. The day will be useful for all early career researchers in maximising the effectiveness of current research and also thinking about future careers.
Speakers include UCL's Provost and Vice-Provost for Research, as well as interesting figures from the Research world such as Professor the Baroness Greenfield, Director of the Royal Institution. Topics covered include: the increasing importance of public engagement in research; be a better researcher – connect with business; managing research relationships; wellbeing and research; how to achieve research success at UCL and beyond.
The day includes presentations, interactive sessions and a panel debate. Refreshments are provided during the day, and the event ends with a drinks reception and prize draw.

Male volunteers required: Earn £15 and receive a free travel vaccine
Looking for healthy male volunteers to take part in a research study on stress, immunity and mood. Looking for volunteers with a wide range of BMI (individuals with BMI of 25.0 -29.9 are particularly welcome).
Volunteers must be non-smoking and aged between 18-36.
The study takes half a day and volunteers will receive feedback on blood pressure and % body fat as well as a free typhoid vaccination and £15 as a token of our thanks for their participation.

Opticon- Calls for Papers & Editor-in-Chief Wanter
The editors of UCL’s academic review, Opticon1826, are now inviting
submissions for publication in the 2009 Autumn Issue, out on 31 October
2009.
Contributions are welcome from all faculties, on any subject, and in a
variety of formats, including articles, reviews, creative work, as well as
responses to previously published material. All members of UCL, be they
undergraduates, postgraduates or staff, can contribute.
The deadline is the end of the day on FRIDAY, 4 SEPTEMBER 2009.
The journal’s online ‘Contributors’ section includes information on
general submission guidelines, style guide, review process and copyright
policy. For any faculty-specific questions, please contact your Faculty
Editor. Please note that any submissions which are not formatted according to the Opticon1826 Style Sheet will be returned to the author for
